Different Perspectives

In this activity, students explore the work of Ruth Asawa and Fritz Scholder, both of whom create art that challenges stereotyping and causes us to reflect on how our narratives of the past are richer when we include multiple perspectives.

Exploring Line

In this activity, students are introduced to the concept of the elements of arts, specifically line, while watching a short video. Students then explore and discuss what they learned about how to look at works of art in a different way.

Exploring Shape

In this activity, students are introduced to the concept of the elements of arts, specifically shape, while watching a short video. Students then explore and apply what they learned in order to look at works of art in a different way.

Making Art for Change

In this activity, students look at images that formed a silent protest against the abject poverty (including fear of starvation) that many families faced during the Great Depression, and also at a work that questions the role of government in the Vietnam War.

Really Seeing the World

In this activity, students learn about how artists view the world and try out some new techniques for observing.

Symbols in Art

In this activity, students become inspired by two artists and their use of symbolism, prompting each student to create their own symbolic language to represent themselves.
